Honoring the flag

David Doty holds up the American flag during the commencement ceremony Sunday, June 7, at Mazama High School.
I am a mother of one of the graduates who participated in the 2009 30th anniversary commencement at Mazama. During the commencement, the American flag was secured between two sandbags on the stage. The wind blew it over and a staff member laid the flag down, and it touched the stage and across the diplomas. It laid there for several minutes. The staff picked it back up and rolled it up and laid it across the chairs. My father-in-law marched off. My husband and I looked behind us and he thought David went home. We looked down to see him marching across the track. He picked up the flag, unrolled it, and held it upright the entire ceremony. I believe it is very commendable and needs to be acknowledged. He is disabled (as you can see from the pictures) and he went above and beyond. His name is David Doty and he’s a local business owner and Vietnam veteran. He recently received a medal at Veterans Memorial Park on Memorial Day. He could not stand that the flag had been laid down. It just was a wonderful, patriotic thing to do. Trace Wonser Klamath Falls

True Patriotism byMichael Teeples July 26, 2009 (report abuse) (reply)
Even having grown up in Klamath Falls, I do not always have a chance to read the Herald and New. I was very happy to have come across this story. As a current service member myself serving in the Navy and a veteran of OIF and OEF it brought tears to my eyes when I read this. This really was an act true American Patriotism! Thank you David Doty for honoring OUR flag like you did that day and thank you for the service that you rendered this country serving in Vietnam. As for the Mazama staff member that laid the flag down then rolled it up and laid it over the chairs, I am disappointed by your act. Let us all remember and know what our flag stands for and all of those that serve this great country and protect OUR flag.

Love thy Country byTaylor Herbst11 months ago (report abuse) (reply)
Having graduated from Mazama High myself and currently serving in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army, I am saddened by the act of laying that flag down by a staff member. I know David Doty and the type of man he is, and patriotic is one of many traits he posseses. Not only did he serve in Vietnam but he was first and foremost a United States Marine, and still is. I want to commend him for doing what others may not have done and flying our country's colors proudly. Semper Fi David Doty and thank you for all you have done in the past and continue to do now. Airborne! 82nd Airborne Division U.S. Army.
