Maddy Juhl won first place and Mikayla Hernandez second place in local and district competition in the 2009-10 Elks American Essay Contest, according to a news release. Both are students in the sixth grade classroom of Kirk Kirkpatrick at Henley Elementary School. The theme for essays not to exceed 250 words was “The American Dream: What Is It?” Juhl’s dream includes having a job she loves (becoming a veterinarian), raising a family, and helping others in need. Hernandez’s dream is to go to college, raise a family, and to be there for the people she loves. Locally, they competed against 86 essays in the fifth and sixth grades bracket and are currently competing at the state level.
