Bonanza High School class of 1990 is celebrating their 20th reunion at Elmer's Restaurant in Klamath Falls. The Friends of Wiard Park System will offer a t-shirt painting activity in their booth at the July Third Thursday event. T-shirts, printed with the Wiard Spray Park logo, are available in children's and adult sizes and can be purchased for $10.00. Fabric paints and supplies will be provided. SEASIDE - Stephenie Steers, a graduate of OIT and former Miss Klamath County & Miss City of Sunshine was crowned Miss Oregon 2010 on Saturday, July 10, 2010. Steers, who competed as Miss Multnomah was crowned before a capacity audience at the Seaside Convention Center. She was the winner of a $10,000.00 scholarship for her win as well as an additional $2,500.00 for winning the Katie Harman Spirit Award and the overall interview award (this was shared between five contestants in an unprecedented five-way tie). Steers will go on to compete for the title of Miss America in Las Vegas in January. Kaitlin Endres, Miss Klamath County placed as the third runner-up. She was also the winner of an overall interview award winner and won the community service award. Endres won a total of $3,200.00 in college scholarships. Rachel Novak, Miss City of Sunshine placed in the top ten. She was one of the winners of the overall interview award as well, and also won the academic excellence award. For her efforts she won... Saturday, July 31, 2010, local Worship Pastor and Christian Recording Artist Jim Weaver will release his debut worship album, “Nameless”, at BBC Ministries, 4849 S. 6th Street, Klamath Falls, with a concert that is free to the public. The Friends of Wiard Park System is competing with charities nationwide for donations ranging from $20,000 to $250,000 through the Chase Community Giving program. Residents can help ensure “The Friends” success by simply voting for Friends of Wiard Park System through the Chase Community Giving program running on the facebook platform. Funds obtained through this forum will be used for the Wiard Spray Park and Renovation Project. The project’s main goal is the installation of a spray ground water feature to replace the old wading pool at Wiard Park. Other aspects of the project include a new ADA compliant restroom facility, landscaping and improvements to parking areas and the access road along the adjacent OC&E trail. AKC Champion De Joie Du Chateau Rocher Beauceron, ‘Gideon’ became a new AKC Champion in Gridley California, at the Butte County Kennel Club dog show. June 18th Gideon won Winner Dog and Best of Opposite Sex for a 4-point major. June 19th he was Best of Breed and placed 4th in the Herding Group. June 20th Gideon went Best of Breed again and cruised into 1st place in the Herding Group. Gideon is also a certified air scent dog with the Klamath County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Dog Unit, and has his Canine Good Citizen title. Gideon has been shown by owner/handle Marlene Palmer.
Three additional Klamath County Sheriff Search & Rescue dogs have passed their “air scent” certification test November 7, 2009. Barb Johnson with her German Shorthair “Ty”, Mary Nelson and her German Shepherd “Zane” and Marlene Palmer with her Beauceron “Gideon” were all tested and passed. Volunteering in the search & rescue dog unit is extremely rewarding. Training a SAR dog takes about 1.5 to 2 years on average and continues for the rest of the operational life of the dog. A good SAR dog should have a stable friendly temperament, excellent scenting capability, strong drive, physical endurance/stamina, high degree of intelligence and a high degree of trainability. This dedicated team of volunteers is OSSA certified and train their canines 1 to 3 times a week for wilderness area search, in air scent and trailing. KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. –Miss Klamath County Kaitlin Endres presented a donation of a brand new projector for a classroom of students with disabilities at Klamath Union High School. Endres is a biology major at Oregon Institute of Technology and is the college's 2009 Outstanding Community Service Award recipient. She is also the president of Alpha Sigma Alpha, OIT’s sorority. Endres was motivated to secure the donation after discussing needs with KUHS parent and OIT student Camille Johnson. The projector was secured by OIT President Chris Maples from the InFocus company.
Eighteen volunteers recently completed a two-day training to become O.S.U. Extension Family Food Education Volunteers. Participants received up-to-date resources on food and nutrition and coalesced around a shared passion for healthy food. Volunteers will collaborate with Extension educators to offer food demonstrations at local pantries, grocery stores and schools serving limited resource families. According to Patty Case, coordinator for the program, “One Extension educator can reach a few hundred people, a group of Extension volunteers can reach a few thousand people. This makes food and nutrition information available to so many more people in our county. We are thankful these volunteers have chosen to spend time supporting our program and we are inspired by their passion.” For more information on Extension’s volunteer program, contact Patty Case at patty.case@oregonstate.edu.

Klamath County Commissioner John Elliott and Basin Transit General Manager Ernie Palmer look on as Ann Lynn, Klamath County Mental Health Director, presents the keys for a new 2010 Chevy Tahoe to Gregory Lara, secure transport driver for Klamath County Mental Health on April 27, 2010. The Tahoe was purchased with a federal grant through the Public Transit Division of the Oregon Department of Transportation, and with matching funding from Basin Transit Special Transportation funds. These grants are designed to fund transportation projects that serve the elderly and persons with disabilities. The Tahoe, which will be used as a secure transport vehicle, is outfitted with special modifications in order to safely transport individuals with severe mental health symptoms to acute psychiatric hospitals in Medford or other parts of the State. For the fourth straight year, the Tulelake FFA brings home two California State FFA championships to the Klamath Basin. Ag Sales and Agronomy won the silver bowls. The Ag Sales team consisted of Lexie Greenbank, Laura Plass, Kelsey King and German Marquez. Lexie Greenbank earned top high individual at state finals in Fresno on April 17th. These students had to do sales presentations in which they sold Tulelake Horseradish, a team presentation, took a test and did an individual customer service scenario. They were the best teams on their individual sales presentations, the test, and the team presentation and were 3rd high team on the individual practicum. Out of a total of 1000 points they won by 50 points. Typically this contest, teams win by 10 points. These outstanding individuals represented Tulelake FFA extremely well. The Agronomy team was crowned state champions on May 1st at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The three member team consisted of German Marquez, Jalin Weaver and Marilyn Macy. German was... (more)

Volunteers will prune shrubs and rake up plant litter at Linkville Pioneer Cemetery on Saturday morning from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. The public is encouraged to help in the spring cleanup. Please bring your own tools, if possible, including pruners, loppers, trowels, and rakes. Dress for the weather and wear protective gloves, boots, and clothing. Light refreshments will be provided. Basin Transit has received another new bus for regular bus route service thanks to the ARRA stimulus grants. The latest new bus is a 23 passenger 2009 Startrans with a heavy duty Chevrolet diesel engine. Purchased for $ 120,401 the bus includes all of the latest ADA handicapped features and automatic tire chains. The bus has been placed in duty on the route serving Pelican City and Stewart Lennox.

Gloria Mae Perkins, retired music specialist from the Klamath County School District, has been recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in music education, according to a news release. For most of her 30-year career in music education, she taught at Ferguson Elementary School. Since retiring, she spends her time listening to music, reading, playing piano, and snowmobiling and plans to continue teaching Sunday school and to take dancing and computer classes.
Klamath Ice Sports, the not-for-profit organization that owns and operates the Bill Collier Community Ice Arena, has been awarded a $1,500 grant for its upcoming Eighth Annual Figure Skating Spectacular by Pacific Power, which will serve as a co-sponsor of the event. “We are very grateful for this generous grant from Pacific Power,” said Suzette Machado, the volunteer director of Klamath Ice Sports, “and we will use the funds to help underwrite the costs of our annual figure skating exhibition.” “We are delighted to provide financial support to Klamath Ice Sports and to be a co-sponsor of its Eighth Annual Figure Skating Spectacular, which is an event that is unique in Southern Oregon,” said Toby Freeman, regional community manager for Pacific Power.
