To all our Friends and Family in the Klamath Basin Thank you for all your support and prayers thru the last 9 months.
We have travled a very long road with Nathan with his recovery. And we have many more miles to go we are in a marathon that will probably last the rest of his life. He suffered severe brain damage and has behavior problems that we deal with on a daily basis. Thru the process we have learned "life is precious and short" and can't always be planned for! The days he is gracious and loving are so precious to us and wish we had more.
He is finally home after waking up from a coma in April and is doing rehab therapies. We as a family would ask that you keep praying for our family. We ask for strengh and patience to handle the unexpected behavior problems and see the man we have all come to care for and love.
We miss Klamath County and all our family and friends that have been there for us to lean on.
We will try to let you know his condition as he proceds with the tasks of daily life. We wish to...
I am so thankful for the Klamath Kid Center! My grandsons have the distinct pleasure to have the Klamath Kid Center as their current caregivers while their Mom is at work. They never are sad when you drop them off and you just see the happiness they enjoy all day long when you go to pick them up! They truly receive the best of care.
The Klamath Kid Center is not just a childcare center; they are a loving, caring family of adults helping raise many children of this community. Every adult takes an active part with not only the children in their classes, but with all children at the Center. They nurture our kids as well as teach many life lessons along the way. We feel so good knowing our kids are well cared for when we have to be away from them.
They are in a temporary facility while they are working hard to remodel their Center over the summer. They made the transition for children, staff and parents very easy from closing up on Friday evening and opening in the temporary facility Monday morning. This...
I am a mother of one of the graduates who participated in the 2009 30th anniversary commencement at Mazama.
During the commencement, the American flag was secured between two sandbags on the stage. The wind blew it over and a staff member laid the flag down, and it touched the stage and across the diplomas. It laid there for several minutes. The staff picked it back up and rolled it up and laid it across the chairs. My father-in-law marched off. My husband and I looked behind us and he thought David went home. We looked down to see him marching across the track. He picked up the flag, unrolled it, and held it upright the entire ceremony.
I believe it is very commendable and needs to be acknowledged. He is disabled (as you can see from the pictures) and he went above and beyond.
His name is David Doty and he’s a local business owner and Vietnam veteran. He recently received a medal at Veterans Memorial Park on Memorial Day.
He could not stand that the flag had been laid down. It just was a wonderful, patriotic...
Lending a helping hand with Oregon Department of Transportation employee Ozzy Mathis and stepfather Stuart Leitzke, who are not pictured, was this group of ODOT employees, who spent their Sunday splitting and stacking wood for next winter to help out their co-worker Mike Campbell, who is recovering from wounds sustained while on deployment in Afghanistan.
They are, from left, Robert Clark, Ed Nelson, Joe Nork, Trent Williams, Chad Smith and Steve Stuve, who are shown in the photo with Campbell, far right.
It is with great appreciation that we would like to say thank you to each and every one of the, including Mike’s mom Maureen Leitzke, who spent the day stacking wood right alongside the guys. It is friends and family like this that makes Mike’s job of defending our nation all worthwhile.

The Assistance League of Klamath Basin wishes to thank the Fairview Elementary School for presenting us with a “Community Appreciation Award” plaque in recognition of our Operation School Bell program. The plaque is prominently displayed at Findables, our used furniture store on E. Main Street.
We would also like to thank the Girl Scout Troop at Fairview for their generous gifts of new clothing. The girls raised the money from cookie sales and shopped for outfits suitable for girls 8-10 years old. The girls wanted to give back to the community and chose the Assistance League as the recipient. It was a very generous gift to us and the clothes will be used this coming school year in the Operation School program.
Fairview is one of 37 schools in the Klamath Basin and Northern California who benefit from the Operation School Bell program. The Operation School Bell Program provides a complete set of new clothing to children in need in K-12 grades. This year thanks to the generosity of the community through grants,...
The Assistance League of Klamath Basin wishes to thank the Altamont Elementary School students, staff, businesses and others who contributed to the Altamont Walk-a Thon on May 28 as part of their “celebrating moving on” day. As a result of the Walk-a-Thon, the Altamont students presented the Assistance League with a check for more than $3,700.00 for the Operation School Bell program. This program provides new clothing to K-12 children in need throughout the school year. The amount of money raised will provide clothing for approximately 30 school children next year. It was a wonderful way for the students to give back to the community and the Assistance League is very proud to be a recipient of the students’ and staff’s hard work. For several years, Altamont students have been part of the Operation School Bell Program. We wish all the students and staff the best for next year. We look forward to seeing many of them at other schools. The Assistance League of Klamath Basin is a non-profit, all volunteer organization...

The Klamath County Museum Advisory Board would like to thank the city of Klamath Falls and specifically Councilman Bill Adams for purchasing the property at 39 Main St.
The efforts of Mr. Adams, by first working to gain the Downtown Urban Redevelopment Advisory Committee’s endorsement and then strongly endorsing the purchase before the city council, have provided an invaluable service to the County Museum system, specifically the integrity of the Baldwin Hotel Museum, which is immediately to the west.
The Museum Advisory Board has for some time had increasing concerns over the deterioration of the adjacent property, known as the Green building. Occupancy of the building, its much deteriorated condition, the possibility of fire not only taking it, but also spreading to the historic Baldwin Hotel have all been topics of ongoing concern.
Thank you Councilman Bill Adams and the city of Klamath Falls for paving the way to a higher and better use of the property, which are the subject of ongoing discussions between...
Findables, the quality used furniture and home decor store operated by the Assistance League of Klamath Basin, has undergone an extensive renovation with the help of local businesses and grants. The process was started in 2006-7 when the Assistance League Board developed a business plan for Findables to convert it from an antiques and collectibles store to a quality, used furniture and home décor store. In addition, energy and safety issues needed to be addressed.Even though the Assistance League set aside re-modeling funds it soon became apparent that
supplemental funds were needed. Jeld-Wen and Meyer Memorial Trust responded with major
grants and, initially, over $30,000 was raised. In addition, over 18 local businesses and many Assistance League volunteers contributed additional time and materials. The store has seen a
major uplift in energy efficiency with new insulation, new thermostats for better heating and air
conditioning; new lights and power. In addition, mobility and safety features such wheelchair...
Camp Fire USA offers a heartfelt “thank you” to all of the people who came together to make our second Spring Break Day Camp a huge success.
We could not provide such a camp without appropriate volunteers. Janet Hughes, Becky Freeman, Ronney Coffman, Justina Coffman, and Bayley Ferris volunteered for the whole week of camp — thank you to them. We also had amazing guests during the week. Mrs. Glass with the Klamath County School District helped with activities for Science Day — thank you to her. All of the dogs and their handlers from Angels in Whiskers were a big hit with the kids and volunteers alike — thank you to them. Kaleo Schroeder and her granddaughter gave a fabulous lesson on hula dancing and talked about Mrs. Schroeder’s experiences being a child in Hawaii during the bombings of Pearl Harbor — thank you to them. Henley High School junior ROTC cadets came and taught Basic Aid Training — thank you to them. Jessica Thomas, Henley High School senior, brought her very cool senior project, a camera obscura,...
Foster care is an important part of our community.
Our foster families work very hard to provide and support the needs of these children. We understand there is a shortfall in the economy right now. We, as the Foster Parent Association, a nonprofit organization, look to our community for help and support for these foster homes with things that aren’t provided to them. We would like to extend a big thank you to manager Doug Lugtig and his staff at the Dollar Store. They have been a big supporter of the Foster Parent Association. This last month, with the help of the Dollar Store and our community, we will be able to make and fill about 500 Easter baskets to provide to our foster families and other community children in need. We would also like to thank the couple who came into the store and filled a cart with more than 100 Easter items. We want to give thanks to our community, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Excell Shipping & Storage for the success of our clothes closet with the donation of clothes that keep...
In today’s economy, people may be spending less on luxuries, but it’s encouraging to know they haven’t cut back on their generosity.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the five restaurants that joined us for our first annual “Dining out Never Felt So Good” campaign to raise money for our Kids in the Middle mentoring program. They are The Mermaid Garden Cafe, Mia and Pia’s Pizzeria, El Palacio’s, Rooster’s Steak and Chop House and The Creamery Brew Pub. Thanks also to the friends and supporters of Citizens for Safe Schools who patronized these community-minded establishments during the last few weeks. Matching responsible mentors with vulnerable youth is a profoundly successful strategy for raising social capital. Social capital — relationships built of trustworthiness, honesty, respect, fairness and good citizenship — is the stuff that truly sustains a community and reaps dividends in both good times and bad. Thanks again to all who believe in our life-changing work. Citizens for Safe Schools
The Crystal Terrace staff deserves a public acknowledgment of their dedication to caring for our senior citizens. My parents moved to the assisted living wing over three years ago. While there have been some staffing changes in that time, the staff has, without exception, been efficient, kind, and caring to them. The staff makes holidays extra special and fun. They decorate public areas and sometimes themselves, according to the holiday, to give the residents an extra smile. They plan a variety of extra activities during the week.
Then there is the kitchen staff. The food is delicious and served attractively. While I have not been able to attend their monthly Night of Elegance, the report from residents and some of their children makes it sound wonderful — with such entrees as filet mignon and kabobs, residents dressed up, and tables are decorated. So thank you to all the Crystal Terrace staff for your care and kindness to my parents. Patricia O’Keeffe
Once again the Dynasty Restaurant on Main Street has generously hosted a community event in support of our local SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) program.
On Monday, March 16, the restaurant donated 35 percent of the proceeds from dinner, take-out and bar tabs to help local kids. Things are particularly tough this year for both our program and our kids and this type of generous support and community spirit makes a tremendously positive statement about the quality of the citizens of Klamath Falls. As always, the food was terrific and every dollar SMART receives truly helps some wonderful kids in a program that’s proven to work (plus, it’s great fun). Speaking of fun, if you have just one hour a week that you’d really like to spend having a great time, we can always use more volunteers. You can reach the local office at 273-2424 or online at www.GetSmart-Oregon.org. Linda White Start Making A Reader Today
On behalf of the players, parents, and basketball fans of Eastern Oregon University, we would like to thank President Chris Maples and the many Hustlin’ Owls Boosters for their great support at the NAIA Men’s National Basketball Tournament .
Each season we play hard against each other but come together as the Cascade Conference at the national tournament. We look forward to both schools’ continued success. Craig Braseth President EOU Boosters
This year’s Run for the Music to benefit the Klamath Union High School Band was a great success.
Many thanks to all who participated in the one mile, 5K, 10K, and the children’s one-mile run. Thank you for bringing your families, your children and parents; it makes this event very fun and enjoyable. A special thank you to Charles Moresi, Twila Pellegrino, Eric and Nancy Wakkuri, Vic Versteeg, Darlene and Scott MacArthur, Judi Vallejos, Nancy and Don Hoffheins, and Janeane Kansaku for all their help in planning and making the day a success. Thank you to Donna Nagy of The Daily Bagel for providing bagels. I need to also thank Diane Bliss, Shaw Nee Stearns, Harriet Cornachione, Marsha Eccles, Linda Pahler, and Renee Hernandez; they have helped all eight years. Klamath Union High School senior Stephanie Machado designed the children’s shirts and Alexis Deutscher and Nikki O’Leary worked hard collecting the children’s prizes; I appreciate their help and support. Thanks to the many volunteers who helped on the course,...
I would like to thank the person who found my receipt and $20 in the parking lot at Fred Meyer last week.
When I noticed it was not in my pocket as I got into my car, I looked around, went back inside, asked the clerk if she had seen it, and it was nowhere to be found. I decided it was gone and hoped that the person who found it really needed it. One evening this week, I came home to find a message from Fred Meyer Rewards Headquarters asking me to go to customer service to pick up my $20 bill. Some “wonderful, honest” person had taken it back into the store after finding it in the parking lot. How refreshing to know that “wonderful, honest” people still do the right thing in these economically trying times. Thank you; you know who you are. God bless you. Ione Thomsen
Klamath Basin Habitat for Humanity ReStore would like to thank Western Tool Supply for donating the wonderful Genie Super-Lift Advantage 5. Dave Snider, Western Tool Manager, recently delivered the lift to the store. According to Michael Greenstreet, ReStore Manager, "This pallet stacker is capable of lifting 1,000 pounds six feet off the ground and able to roll them around. The SuperLift costs over $2,000 and is a welcomed addition to the ReStore." Thank you Western Tool Supply for your generosity.
We would like to thank Mike Beeson of Beeson Distributors, Pepsi-Cola of Klamath Falls, and Cash & Carry from the bottom of our hearts. We cannot begin to express our appreciation for the kind donations for our recent field trip.
Every year, we take our three fifth-grade classes from Shasta Elementary School on a two-day, fun-filled trip to Portland. We visit the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Intel, the Oregon Zoo, and the State Capitol. These three distributors donate bottled water, granola bars, apples, and oranges for our growing students. It’s so nice to know that, even during these tough economic times, the people in our community find a way to help others. The Ross Ragland Theater’s Fifth Annual Red-Tie Romp fundraiser auction was at the theater on Feb. 7.
And, for the fifth year in a row, the event was successful in raising greatly needed funds for the theater and its ACCESS program for low-income families and children. One of the highlights of the evening was the finale of the Annual NYC Broadway Extravaganza Raffle. The grand prize winner of a five-day/four night stay in New York City, including tickets to two Broadway shows, two dinners for two and two round-trip airline tickets, was Dr. Theresa and Tyler Tucker. The second prize winner of a three-night stay and tickets for two shows in San Francisco was Sue Dean. The third prize winner of a one-night stay and two tickets to an Oregon Shakespeare Festival play was Marshall Staunton of Tulelake. Congratulations to all of our Broadway Extravaganza Raffle prize winners. Without the help of the Red-Tie Romp volunteers and auction-item donors, the event would not have been possible. On behalf of the Ross Ragland...
Camp Fire USA would like to thank the entire community for supporting our kids during our annual Candy Sale fundraiser.
We weren’t sure if things would go well this year because of economic uncertainty, but the people of Klamath and Lake counties came through for us again. Individuals and businesses generously purchased thousands of packages of candy from our boys and girls. Thank you! Klamath Camp Fire has a higher than average number of youth members on scholarships, and candy sales help keep those scholarships available. We also thank our leaders, youth members, and their families for getting out there in the cold of January and February to get the job done. Camp Fire USA extends a special thank you to all of the businesses that went the extra mile to help: Albertson’s, Fred Meyer, South Sixth Street Safeway, Klamath Superior Motor Co., Winema Electric, Brad Zimmer, Windermere Real Estate, and My Mechanic. In addition to purchasing candy, My Mechanic donated a child’s bicycle to be raffled off. Thank you...
Thank you to all who supported the Tulelake Area Service Club’s scholarship fundraiser on Saturday night. We had a crowd of over a hundred and a variety of delicious soups from which to choose. Thank you also to the Herald and News for providing notice of our event. Finally, thank you to Jennifer Holl of County Cork for donations to our raffle basket won by Peyton Prosser.

I personally, along with the Klamath Falls Camera Club, want to thank each and every one of you who helped make the Winter Wings Festival possible.
It was very exciting this year and it was great to be a part of it. I’m glad to see a conference of this caliber in the Klamath Basin. Many local businesses also benefited from the event, such as Holiday Inn, which had 68 rooms filled and provided six rooms to Winter Wings for free. A special thanks to Canon and Leo’s Camera Shop, which sponsored the photo contest with prizes, hosted the photography workshop, gave us all a visual treat at the Adam Jones presentation and hosted the Sunday morning field trip with Jones. Thanks to the many volunteers who put so many hours of their own time into creating this festival. A special thanks to Dave Menke and others at the refuge that helped on so many of the field trips. We are all blessed in the Klamath Basin to have such a wonderful refuge that has so many great gifts of wildlife. Thanks again to all those who helped make...
one of several student clubs at Klamath Community College. It is an international student organization that encourages students to complete projects both on their college campus and throughout the community.
These projects focus on business ethics, market economics, environmental sustainability, and other topic areas, and must be carefully planned and evaluated. Teams then participate in regional competitions each year, encouraging students to showcase these projects with other SIFE teams and to explore advanced career and educational opportunities. The KCC Team SIFE has been incredibly active this year. Their two most recent projects were only completed with substantial commitment from local businesses and organizations. These projects included a gift-wrapping fundraiser and an annual “Financial and Consumer Literacy Fair” held on the KCC campus in January. The businesses and organizations that deserve recognition for their contributions of time, energy, enthusiasm, and resources to these events include: Borders... |
