Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Katie Tucker graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. She also earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Tucker is the daughter of Shelley and Rod Tucker of Klamath Falls, a 2001 graduate of Henley High School and a 2009 graduate with bachelor’s degree from Western Oregon University.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Thomas Howard graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. He also earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Howard achieved distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of George and Cathy Hoppe of Klamath Falls and a 1991 graduate of Mazama High School.

Cavaretta is the son of Diana Junker of Klamath Falls and a 2009 graduate of Mazama High School.
Army National Guard Spec. Nathanial Swisher has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The nine weeks of training consisted of basic infantry training and advanced individual training. Swisher received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman. Corporal Fernando Nanni is returning home to Klamath Falls from serving his country in Iraq. He currently serves in the U.S. Army and is returning home to his 5-year-old daughter Sophia Nanni, his mother Maria Bortolotti (Nanni) and brother George Nanni. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class William Worden, whose wife Keri is the daughter of Brenda Patterson of Klamath Falls and William C. Patterson, returned home on March 15 from a four month and two day deployment aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58) home ported in Mayport, Fla. His ship operated under the control of U.S. 6th Fleet and traveled up and down the West African coast, visiting several nations along the way to provide military-to-military training and community relations project support. The ship was able to donate 10 pallets of Project Handclasp hygiene and recreation items to many children in the countries visited. Capt Ken Holmes was recently selected for promotion to the rank of Major in the United States Air Force. He was also selected to attend Air Command and Staff College in residence, an honor reserved for the top 20% of promotees. Capt Holmes is currently the Senior Operations Flight Commander for the 2nd Space Warning Squadron located at Buckley Air Force Base, Colorado. He is a graduate of Mazama High School and Oregon State University and has a Masters Degree in Education. Capt Holmes resides in Aurora, Colorado with his wife Jessica and their two-year-old daughter, Samantha. He is the son of Graylin and CMSgt (R) Sylvia Holmes, formally of Klamath Falls.

Marine Corps Pfc. Jordan Long, the daughter of Susan Morton of Klamath Falls and Richard Long, Jr. of Klamath Falls, recently completed the Marine Corps Basic Enlisted Supply Course. During the course with Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools Training Command, Camp Lejeune, N.C., she learned to use supply publications and catalogs, general accounting, and the basics of naval correspondence. Long is a 2009 graduate of Klamath Union High School and joined the Marine Corps in July 2009.

Army Reserve Spec. Joseph Scott has been mobilized and activated at Fort Dix, N.J., in preparation for deployment to serve in support of either Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom. He is a member of the 382nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion based in Seattle. The soldiers are normally activated from Army Reserve or Army National Guard units from throughout the U.S. They go through a series of in-processing procedures and training classes that prepare them for skills and situations they may face in their deployed environment. Scott, a rifleman, has four years of military service. He resides in Midland.
Pfc. David Neu Jr., 19, Klamath Falls, graduated from U.S. Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif., on Jan. 29, 2010. He completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training as one of 69 recruits in Training Platoon 2107. Following 10 days home on leave, he will report to Camp Pendleton, Calif., for one month of military combat training, then Military Occupation Specialty School at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Neu is a 2009 graduate of Mazama High School and the son of Lance and Mary Worton of Klamath Falls.
Pvt. Shannon Spence completed her basic training in the U.S. Army in May 2009 at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. She also completed extensive physical and combat training and advanced training as a heavy equipment mechanic at Fort Leonard Wood. She was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, in October 2009 with the 20th Engineer Battalion and deployed to Afghanistan on Jan. 20 of this year. Spence is the daughter of Linda and Dennis Utley of Chiloquin and Tracy Spence of Bakersfield, Calif., and the mother of Darrien Utley, 9, and Mikayla Spence, 5, of Chiloquin.

Navy Airman Recruit Paul Verling, son of Donna Cleveland of Medford and Bill Verling of Klamath Falls, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, he completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. During the eight-week program he completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. He is a 2009 graduate of Klamath Union High School.
All veterans who have served honorably for our nation, are entitled to receive military honors at their interment or memorial service. The family of the deceased veteran must inform the funeral director of their wish to have military honors. It is the responsibility of the funeral director to inform the family of all of the entitlements available, i.e. burial flags, headstones and presentation of military honors, to include all available resources for providing each. One such resource for providing military honors is the voluntary members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Pelican Post 1383 and Crater Lake Detachment of the Marine Corps League’s Color Guard. This service is at no cost to the family. However, donations are accepted to offset the cost of transportation and uniforms. Please remember, our veterans have earned the rights to military honors and all family members should question their funeral director for this information. Army Pvt. Joseph Grohs graduated from One Station Unit Training at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training. During basic military training, Grohs received instruction in drill and ceremonies, military customs and courtesies, map reading, tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, field training, and first aid skills. He also developed combat skills and handled various weapons available to the infantry soldier. During advanced individual training, he received instruction to serve as an infantryman/mortarman using light and heavy anti-armor weapons, indirect-fire support, and mechanized operations while assigned to a rifle or mortar squad.
