During TV Turn Off week in April, students and their families from Stearns Elementary School learned that eating smart and moving more can be fun. Food and physical activity stations were placed throughout the school and hosted by school staff, O.S.U. Extension Family Nutrition Program and other volunteers. Basketball, rope jumping, food group relay, seed planting, fruit smoothies and food bingo were just a few of the activities at the Family Food and Fun Night. Over 300 people were in attendance and many said it was a wonderful, positive experience for the whole family. A special thank you goes to Stearns’ principal, Christie Gestvang, and her amazing staff for partnering with O.S.U. Extension Service to make this event a success. Staff at Stearns, especially Shari Glidden and Tiffany Poe are true “food heroes” in our community. For more information on Extension’s Nutrition Program, contact Patty Case at patty.case@oregonstate.edu.

Last week, the Klamath County Rotary Club came to our school and passed out dictionaries to all 90 third-graders. They give every third-grader in Klamath County a personal dictionary each year. For many of my students, this is the only dictionary in their household.
My students and I feel very appreciative of this organization and want to recognize their hard work and education. We were wondering if you could recognize this positive act of community involvement in the newspaper. We feel it is very important that the people of Klamath Falls know how lucky we are to live in a community where people support the youth.
