Two Klamath Union High School juniors achieved honors in the welding division at the Skills USA competition at Linn-Benton Community College on April 10 and 11. Aaron Frei, right, placed second among 13 entrants in the tungsten inert gas welding competition — his second runner-up finish in two years. Joey Gardner, left, placed fifth among 32 entrants in stick welding. Both might have finished higher if not for an oversight. “We forgot to bring our resumes and it docked us some points,” Frei explained. They currently take welding classes through Klamath Community College and are receiving college credit for their welding work, although they competed in the high school division. Frei said he will have a welding certificate from KCC by the time he graduates from high school. He wants to go to a technical school in Wyoming to become a custom car fabricator. Gardner said he is trying to get accepted into the Air Force Academy. “I want to be a pilot,” he said.

During the recent spring break, students from Henley High School traveled to Costa Rica under the guidance and supervision of their science teacher Jack Lee. This program provided an opportunity for the students to become part of a vibrant atmosphere of flora, fauna, and amazing animals. Those who participated worked hard, had fun, were taught well and achieved a newfound appreciation of the world around them, Lee said. What they brought to Costa Rica, what they experienced there, and what they took away certainly helped to prepare them for wanting to change the world around them for the better. They are also receiving high school credit for this experience, he added. The trip was not associated with the Klamath County School District and all the funding for the trip was raised by the students through fundraising, work, and donations over the last eight months. Costa Rica is located between Nicaragua and Panama in Central America. It is geographically about the size of West Virginia, but features more...
