Tulelake High school had their homecoming the last days of September into the beginning of October, and that meant that the spirit week was back, with even more wacky outfits than before. This year we had Hick Town Day as one of our five dress-up days, and because Tulelake is such a rural town we had a really crazy outfit turn-out. We had the hunters, farmers, and, of course, the hillbilly hicks. The helpful ideas that our student council gave us were hunter, cowboy/cowgirl, and “whatever you think feels most hick”. Some of the outfits people had on were full camouflage, overalls, and lots of cowboy hats. There were also a few Ghillie Suits running around the school that day.
Some of the students who participated said that it was “fun for the students and staff alike because everyone got a good laugh”. One of the students, Gabby Rascon, stated that “hick day was fun and that, in her opinion, it wasn’t much of a change of clothes for some of the students because they already, pretty much, dressed like hicks.”...
LAKEVIEW — Twelve more Lake County students have been selected to receive scholarships from the Collins-McDonald Trust Fund, according to a news release.
They include Jenna Chiono, Rachel Simonson and Mason Vickerman, all graduates of Paisley High School, Colin McKenzie and Jane Lelis, both graduates of Lakeview High School, Beverly Henkel, a graduate of North Lake High School, and college undergraduates Jason Getty and Rebecca Richards.
There are also four post-graduate students. They are Sarah Hollars, who is pursuing a master of fine arts degree at Hunter College; Denise Mensch, who is pursuing a master of nursing degree at Montana State University’s College of Nursing; Jolaina Peltier, who is pursuing a master of arts in sports administration degree at University of Louisville; and Brittany Price Waugh, who is pursing a master of science in school psychology degree at George Fox University’s School of Education.
The scholarships are $6,600 per school year.
Heather Caldwell of Klamath Falls was the winner of the Fred Wedam Memorial Scholarship and Hannah Gallup of Malin and Sarah Kellom of Klamath Falls were the winners of the scholarships awarded by the Klamath County Cattlewomen, according to a news release.
Each scholarship was for $1,000.
Caldwell is the daughter of Hank and Debbie Caldwell and will be graduate student in veterinary medicine at Oregon State University.
Gallup is the daughter of Mark and Doris Gallup and will be a senior pursuing a degree in animal science at Oregon State University.
Kellom is the daughter of John and Toni Kellom and will be a sophomore at Eastern Oregon University, where she is majoring in agriculture business management with minors in crop and animal science.
Ashley Fisher of Chiloquin, a graduate of Chiloquin High School, received a bachelor of arts degree in politics from Whitman College on May 24.
Kristin Bivens has been chosen president of Klamath Community College’s first student government, which becomes effective on July 1, according to a news release.
Bivens, who enrolled at KCC last fall, has a 4.0 grade-point average while studying environmental science.
Dominique Johnson was named vice president. She also began at KCC last fall and holds a 3.88 grade-point average while studying for an associate of science degree. She founded the Active Living Club and is a current member of Student Leadership Council.
Susan Cantrell is the secretary. She is working toward a degree in medical office, which would be her second degree at KCC. She is the student representative on the KCC Board of Education, vice president of the Students in Free Enterprise Club, and a member of Student Leadership Council.
Linda Sims is the treasurer. She began at KCC this spring, studying medical office, and has eight years of experience working in accounting.

Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., has announced the Second Congressional District winner and runners-up for the 2009 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery, according to a news release
Tianna Hyde, a senior at Henley High School, was selected as runner-up for the district. Her charcoal and graphite piece titled “Binding” will hang for one year in Walden’s LaGrande district office.
Jessica Linman, a sophomore at Henley High School, was selected as fourth runner-up for the district. Her oil pastels piece titled “Penny” will be displayed for one year in Walden’s Medford district office.
The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide program for students to showcase their artistic abilities and highlight the importance of art education. To enter the competition, high school students submitted two-dimensional artwork that was original in concept, design and execution.
LAKEVIEW — Nineteen high school students and one college undergraduate will receive scholarships, it was announced by the trustees of the Bernard Daly Educational Fund.
Fifteen of the high school students are from Lakeview High School. They are Jonathan Boothe, Dulce Castro, Kasey Clemens, Brent Corning, Kyle Eversole, Jared Fitzpatrick, Mary Grant, Emily Hedlund, Aquilegia Leet, Katie McDonald, John Pittman, Jonathan Squires, Christine Taylor, Kent Vernon and Amanda Yates.
The others are Preston Fivecoat, Hannah Hand and Colleen Hunt from North Lake High School, and Mary Effingham from Solid Rock Christian School.

Oregon Institute of Technology’s commencement ceremony was Saturday, June 13, at John F. Moehl Stadium on the OIT campus.
Each year at commencement, excellence among OIT’s student body is acknowledged by bestowing student awards and selecting individual students to speak, according to a news release
Michelle Pies and Jennifer Hawkes were this year’s student speakers.
Pies graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She was recently accepted to the Touro University-Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Hawkes graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in management and an emphasis in marketing.
Citizenship
Lauren “Abbye” Brown is the winner of the Owens Citizenship Award. It’s intended for the student who, in the opinion of the faculty, has made outstanding contributions to the university.

BONANZA — Five $1,500 scholarships have been awarded to senior students at Bonanza High School by the Bonanza Lions Club, according to a news release.
Receiving them were Leanne De Jong, who was honored as Lions Student of the Year, McKenzie Masten, David Shanahan, Julianna Bath and Mike Hammerich.
The funds were raised through an annual crab feed and carnival.
